Any aspirant of a career in marine engineering must have a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, mechanical engineering or ocean engineering. To enroll into any university, you require a minimum of high school diploma. Mechanical engineers must have a sound knowledge in subjects like hydraulics, materials testing and mechanics.
Mechanical engineering undergraduates may later specialize in ocean engineering or marine engineering. Since marine engineering could involve part of the job on the sea, some sailing experience is an added advantage. Students who are prone to sea sickness can opt for jobs off site, as designers or manufacturers. Marine engineers can also work as officers in merchant navy. This however, requires you to have a license from the US government. To obtain the license you must be a graduate of the US merchant marine academy. There are also six state merchant marine academies which can also qualify you for the license. Along with this you will need to pass an exam set by the board, and pass the physical test too. Sailing experience can be an added advantage in obtaining license.
