Promising engineering careers

One of the most promising careers is engineering. Basically this particular field is the association and application of the principles of mathematics and science to aid technical problems in providing for the needs of the society.

Engineering has several areas of specialization that aspirants can choose from. Some fields of engineering are primarily concerned with the creation of various products which may include chemicals, robots, power plants, toys and a lot more. The design and production job performed by engineers also involves reliability, safety and cost evaluations. Many engineers are also working on testing manufactured products and determining any roots of product failures. Moreover many engineers work to administer production and over all maintenance in factories.

These are just some of the many and varying tasks of engineers. According to the Federal Government’s Standards Occupational Classification system there are 17 fields of specialization under engineering which includes the following: civil, mechanical, industrial, electrical, electronics, computer hardware, aerospace, environmental, chemical, health and safety, materials, petroleum, nuclear, biomedical, marine and naval, mining and geological, agricultural and other forms.

Among the mentioned fields of engineering biomedical is expected to have the highest employment growth from 2008 to 2018 which is estimated at 72%. The growing concern on health issues is the primary contributor making a huge demand for biomedical engineers. This particular field of specialization focuses on the development of devices, equipments and procedures that could address the health and medical problems of the people. Biomedical engineers particularly help in developing products like artificial body organs and prosthetics. They also design medical devices for imaging systems like the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Because of the complexity of the job biomedical engineers perform they should have sound background in electronics or mechanical engineering aside from specialties in biomedical engineering. Moreover, for biomedical engineering jobs related to research, employers require graduate degrees.

Projected to have the second highest employment growth from 2008 to 2018 is environmental engineering. The employment in this specialization is projected to increase to 31 percent within the decade. This is because many companies are forced to comply with the environmental regulations which aim to prevent the creation of new environmental hazards and control the growing environmental issues being experienced today. Environmental engineers develop ways to address environmental concerns like pollution, waste disposal, public health and recycling through the use of chemistry and biology principles. Environmental engineers also look at global issues such as global warming and ozone depletion. They are also involved in wildlife protection. 

In general all the fields of engineering are expected to display certain employment growth from 2008 to 2018 in varying percentages. For almost all engineering jobs, entry-level, bachelor’s degree in engineering is a requirement. In some cases graduates with degrees in mathematics or natural science are necessary qualifications.  License is required if the engineer will be working directly for the public. To become licensed engineers, better known as professional engineers (PEs), engineers should have acquired their degrees from programs accredited by ABET, and they must have completed State examination. They are also required to acquire 4 years of relevant job experience.
