How to become a qualified Computer and Information Systems Manager?

The role of a computer and information systems manager does not just go around computer software and applications. Becoming a manager is not an easy task. You have to deal with various responsibilities that would call for a substantial output in order to deliver the best results. Planning, coordinating, direct research and designing the computer and other related activities are also embraced by this profession. It requires not only the knowledge of the different computer operating systems but also strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.

As per Bureau of Labor Statistics, job of this nature held about 264,000 posts in 2006 and demand would call for more Computer and Information Systems Managers six years from now as expected to grow at a huge speed than the average career.

Other entities and organizations require a Bachelor’s Degree for management positions specially those with Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA). Many others favor a graduate degree but you may also advance to a higher leadership position in your field just as long as you have the experience and potential to manage a team or group of people. This is not about the level of education you have attained but the capability and strengths you posses in order to perform well and deliver results in a timely professional manner.

As a manager, it is imperative that you discuss with top management the areas for improvement in order to achieve both technical and business goals. Knowing the root cause would simplify your job and everyone’s lives in the business by leading you through the most effective course of action. Get as much details as possible. Huge problems are most often than not caused buy small ones. These and the best of your ability will help you make detailed plans seamless in the long run.

Delegate tasks to your subordinates – direct the works of systems analyst, computer programmers, support specialists and other computer-related workers. Assign and review the work of your team. Make sure that the newest and most innovative technologies are evaluated by the Chief Technology Officers and determine how these can help the organization grow. Check with the Management Information Systems Directors if the information systems and computing resources are well managed for the entire group. Ensure that the requirements, budgets and schedules for the organization’s information technology projects are finely administered by the Project Managers. The firm’s local area network including hardware, applications software, systems software and all other computer-related configurations are supposed to be well set by the LAN/WAN (Local/Wide Area Network) Managers.

After setting the goals, provide maintenance and security of networks to significantly contribute success to each of your direct reports. Each of them has a vital role to play in the organization so give what is due to them accordingly. Share your best practices and expertise to equip them and become the best worker. Touch base with them once in a while to let them feel they are valued and important to the process.
