Are Women To Save The Day?

Gender discrimination issue has been echoing in our society long time ago. In almost all aspects of life inequality brought about by gender differences appeared to be an issue that has to be dealt with over and over again.

Today, another underrepresentation of one of the two genders has caught the attention of most people. It is becoming apparent that women seem to be lesser involved when it comes to the field of science and engineering. According to The United States Nat’l Science Found’n and Nat’l Institutes of Health’s ‘Survey of Students who graduated and Post doctorates in Science and Engineering, women enrollment in the said fields is growing slowly than men. Research showed that from 2007 to 2008 men’s enrollment increased by 2.9% leaving behind women’s enrollment at 2.1%. In 2006 to 2007 women’s enrollment in graduate school of science and engineering is at 3.4% increase while men’s cut was at 3.2%.

What The United States Nat’l Science Found’n and Nat’l Institutes of Health ‘s survey has found out reflected the report presented by the National Science Board about the fluctuating numbers of US citizens who are in line to become scientists and engineers despite the growing need of experts in the said field.

Underrepresentation of women can somehow be seen as a contributor to this declining candidate’s number for science and engineering careers. Should it be addressed it can aid to the projected scarcity of US scientists and engineers by 2020.

In a very controversial speech given by Lawrence H. Summer, the then president of Harvard University, he frankly mentioned that a lack of talent and motivation can largely explain the underrepresentation of women in the fields of science and engineering.

This striking statement triggered the creation of “Beyond Bias & Barriers: Arriving at the Potential of Females in Academic Engineering and Science.” Headed by Donna Shalala, president of the University of Miami pointed out that studies on cognition and the like did not find any significant biological difference between man and female sex in science and mathematics performances to justify the low representation of women in the said fields.

The report of the Committee stated that the U. S. will never permit underperformance in our educational institutions so it can attract the brightest and the best mind to the engineering and science enterprise; It will not devalue the share of the members of the workforce in practices of discrimination and gender inequality.

If people can only go beyond stereotyping about what a person can do and cannot do most if not all of the world’s problem can be solved in just a matter of time. Now that there is a threat of US scientists and engineers’ scarcity which was projected to inflict serious threats to the country in general, maybe it is time to move forward and leave a gender discrimination issue that is hindering the maximization of the United States man power and talents.
