Eastern Kentucky University

Eastern Kentucky University was established in 1906 as Normal School and the training of teachers was started. Over the years, several undergraduate and graduate programs were added in different fields. The university was accredited to the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1928.

In 1966, the educational institution was renamed as Eastern Kentucky University through a law signed by the state Governor, Edward Breathitt. The university provides programs in arts and sciences, business and technology, education, health sciences, and justice and safety. The total number of bachelor majors offered by the Eastern Kentucky University is 102, covering a wide range of subjects that are employment-oriented. The college operates six campuses at Corbin, Danville, Fort Knox, Hazard, Lancaster, Manchester, and Somerset.

Distant and Online Learning at Eastern Kentucky University

The distance learning through online teaching at the Eastern Kentucky University is delivered in various methods such as print material, telephone, email, audio and video tapes, computer, television/VCR, and satellite. The students are able to access the course materials through CD ROMs, interactive video, Internet, and the Web.

The number of students enrolling for online had been rising significantly over the last several years, registering a 30% increase during 2007-08 to 14,600 enrollments. The Eastern Kentucky University offers more than 60 academic courses through interactive TV in each semester. The teaching network covers the entire state through 2-way video conferencing, linking the 8 universities in the state, community colleges, the regional campuses and centers of the Eastern Kentucky University, public schools, and other state agencies.

Apart from the interactive TV, the university provides web-based courses so that the students of both on-campus as well as off-campus learning are able to access them through the Internet. More than 600 courses had been delivered online during 2007-08, apart from the complete online degrees by the Eastern Kentucky University College of Justice and Safety. Along with the above facilities, the university also provides undergraduate and graduate courses through the Kentucky Virtual Campus.

Cost of Education at Eastern Kentucky University

The tuition fee for full-time semester is about $3,156 for a Kentucky resident and around $8,640 for a student from any other state. However, such students are allowed to pay a reduced tuition fee of $4,992, if they are residents of the counties of the states bordering Kentucky or if they are children of a graduate from the university.

Students having GPA of 3.0 or higher in the high school with a composite score of 25 or more on the ACT, with scores above 18 in English, Reading, or Mathematics are also eligible for this reduced tuition fees. For less than 12 credit hours, the tuition fees are $263 for Kentucky residents and $720 for non-residents. For the online programs, the bachelor programs are priced at $350 for each credit hour and the master programs are at $500 per credit hour.
