The future of education lies in virtual classrooms

October 30,2011 by: admin

Technology has literally changed the face of education and brought about a transformation to traditional systems of education. Just like the way listening to music has changed over the years, or Wikipedia has brought about changes in the way we access information, the way we learn is likely to change very drastically in the coming years. Due to the huge advancements in technology and the digital world, even learning can be imparted easily at a fraction of the cost. Students can now access audio, video, text, as well as interactive & collaborative resources through the internet. Teachers as well as students from every corner of the globe can interact with each other without boundaries, through these virtual classrooms and this can make traditional universities that have huge operational costs, quite redundant.

There are a number of advantages in online education when compared to traditional education. The biggest factor that one must consider is the cost. This is a huge advantage that online education has over the traditional one. It is the infrastructure in the traditional system, which makes education horribly expensive. When we draw comparisons between the two, we are not referring to the 10% or 20% cost advantage. A renowned Stanford professor, Sebastian Thrun, firmly believes that the same quality of education could be delivered easily at about 1% or 2% of what it might cost at the Stanford University. Sometime ago, even Bill Gates had predicted that the cost of obtaining a degree will eventually come down from $200,000 to $2,000 due to the advancements in technology. This would bring about a paradigm shift in the field of education.

Virtual classrooms are gaining popularity due to the amazing flexibility and convenience it offers. These virtual classrooms can be accessed from just about any place where there is an internet connection. Students can easily access these classrooms from offices, homes, internet café, or just about any other place. The students don’t have to worry about the cost factor or the time involved.

These online classrooms will help in breaking all the geographical barriers. This will help students who live in smaller cities where there are lack of educational facilities and opportunities. These limitations will no longer be able to hamper their growth aspects.

Due to the technological innovations, it would be easier to create and share videos online and students can take part in group discussions etc. This will help in enriching the learning experience as well.
